A Toy Christmas

Another project I have been working on this year is a contribution to a Christmas anthology, to be published in November by (appropriately enough) Christmas Press. I received the lovely cover this morning by email, so thought it might be a suitable time to share details of the book, A Toy Christmas, and my part in it. Christmas Press is the brainchild of the incredibly creative Sophie Masson, and over the last couple of years it has published a number of illustrated children’s books, concentrating mostly on folk and fairy tales.

A Toy Christmas is a seasonal anthology of new stories by established and emerging authors, illustrated in full colour. As Sophie writes: Toys are different at Christmas. They have their own special kind of magic... My own story, “The Dolls’ Nativity”, was an absolute dream to write; I think I enjoyed writing it more than anything else I have worked on this year, and it came together incredibly easily. (I just wish it was like that with everything I write!) It’s Christmas Eve, and three wooden dolls, Queen Isabel, her major-domo Jacques, and Tourmaline the cook, set out on a wintry quest to find the perfect present for the baby Jesus in the family’s nativity scene. Other contributors to the anthology are Meredith Costain, Michael Grey, Fiona McDonald, Juliet Marillier, Anna Bell, Ian Irvine, Kathy Creamer, George Ivanoff, Goldie Alexander, David Allan, Rebecca Fung, Beattie Alvarez, with an introduction by Sophie Masson. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished book, and am sure it will be a lovely and appropriate Christmas present for many Australian children.

UPDATE: A Toy Christmas will be available in shops on 7th November. Pre-order it here.
